disinfection is an opportunity

First of all, you need to clean before you disinfect. Sanitizing is not disinfecting. We all need to understand the implications of NOT disinfecting our homes, businesses, and vehicles. You see, disinfection is actually an investment – not a cost. It’s an investment in the health & safety of all those we care about or come into contact with. By being a leader in your disinfection routines, you are setting an example, and you will be recognized as a person or business that genuinely cares about people. It all starts with the disinfection of the person before they enter your business or home. Washing hands or using hand sanitizer is the first step. The second step is actually a regular disinfection process. At home, we suggest washing or disinfecting at least twice a day and after any outside activities. In a vehicle, we suggest having an individual sprayer and spraying it every time you get in and out of the vehicle. At times having gloves, a mask, and some eye protection are also critical. Yes, this is time-consuming, so you will have to determine your own balance between safety and comfort. Don’t forget to read about dwell times on your product. Dwell time is how long you have to wait before the job is done appropriately. Read your label.

Similarly, in a business, we recommend having hand sanitizers at every entrance and throughout the facility, while ensuring commonly touched surfaces are frequently disinfected, preferably after every use. In a business, disinfection can be a valuable tool to enhance your customer’s and employees’ confidence and comfort level. Have a good quality hand disinfectant on hand at all times. The one you choose is crucial and has the sanitizer in a larger script and readily available. This is very important for people with allergies of any kind. Have good quality masks available and make sure your employees wear one as well. This protects both the wearer and others in close contact. Spray as often as possible, since your customers will notice your actions and appreciate your efforts. Also, be sure to have signs about your disinfection processes, prominently displayed, and again signs with the ingredients you are using to disinfect at each entrance. I would ask on the signs if you have any allergies, followed by an ingredient list. A little bit of effort goes a very long way, and your customers will read and respond accordingly.

A little note about disinfection equipment: as in every industry, there are many products to choose from. Some seem expensive, some are very expensive, while some seem to be a real bargain. Our view is that if you disinfect properly and use the right tools, you will be protected. We do not believe in using scare tactics or making outlandish claims to get you to buy specific products. All we want to do is give you the information you need to make the right decisions. Look at various equipment, ask questions, make a choice that works for you and write a review online to help others know what works and what does not.

Thank you for considering us. Stay safe and stay healthy.

people are more aware of hygiene

When you walk into a home or business to use the public washroom, what are the first things you notice? What is the overall cleanliness? Is there toilet paper available? Is there enough soap? Are there air dryers or paper to dry your hands? If the answer is yes to all of these, it gives you a comfort level with the business or residence. We all do it and we all have a certain level of comfort. After all, washroom hygiene is a very personal thing.

In a business, the aim of cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting is to ensure the safety of your customers and staff, which in turn, boosts customer confidence during the pandemic. In a home, it’s where we live. However, for some of us, our workplace is our second home. So why is it that we tend to view our workplace as different from our home when it comes to standards of cleanliness and safety?

Whether you are a business that has been lucky enough to be open through COVID, or you are attempting to re-open, we all need to change our behavior, since the future is going to be very different. I do not like the saying, “it’s going to be a new future”. I prefer to say “we have to adjust with common sense as things change”. We need to understand the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, and sterilizing. We need to read labels to make sure we understand contact and dwell times. Contact is how long the disinfectant is on the surface, dwell time is the amount of time the surface must remain visibly wet, in order to kill pathogenic microorganisms before the disinfectant is wiped or rinsed off.

Here are some questions you need to ask yourself. Is your disinfection process in place? How are we doing it? When do we need to do it? Why are we doing it? These are questions we need to answer. Assess your business and look ahead to change. Change can be a good thing, and people do recognize your efforts and appreciate your concern for their health and safety.

Be sure to read and follow label instructions. These instructions will include information on contact and dwell times so that the product can effectively do its job. Also always keep disinfectants and sanitizers out of reach of children. Use soap and water to clean their toys or anything they will touch or put in their mouth.

In our next article, we will be writing about disinfection methods and suggested protocols. This is article # 5. I hope you are enjoying our articles as much as we enjoy sharing them with you.

Thank you for considering us. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Electrostatic vs. Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) vs. Fogging

Are you confused as to the difference between electrostatic sprayers, ULV sprayers, and foggers? Well, you are not alone. In this article, we are covering some basic misunderstandings and perceptions that have convinced people that electrostatic spraying is the most effective method of disinfecting.

Both electrostatic and ULV are effective in their own ways and we need to understand the differences. It seems most people believe that they are not as well protected unless they use the electrostatic option. Some good marketing and mixed information have caused this perception. In our opinion, each one is definitely different in the way they spray, but not really in the effectiveness of disinfecting. That is why we sell both types so that you have options and are able to make your own choices.

The wrap-around effect with Electrostatic sprayers means exactly that; it wraps around. This means you can disinfect surfaces, including the back, sides, and crevices of objects.

ULV sprayers, on the other hand, are better for treating open areas where you are not concerned about vertical surfaces. They do not electrically charge the solution. However, the ULV sprayer will attain the same end result as the electrostatic systems, but with higher production and capacity, killing 99.99% of pathogens. ULV also has the ability to be adjusted to allow for an optimal droplet size based on the surface being disinfected. Electrostatic sprayers may have some adjustments but not as flexible as the ULV sprayers on the market today.

Foggers are used mainly in agricultural applications and should not be used to disinfect homes, businesses, and institutions. They have been tested by the CDC and EPA and proved to be ineffective in these types of applications.

Remember, the sprayer is just the sprayer. What’s more important is cleaning the surface first, then sanitizing it. The last step is disinfecting. The important factors are the contact and dwell times of your disinfectant. Always read the label and only use products approved by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), Health Canada, or CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Also, make sure you keep chemicals out of children’s reach. Do not spray toys or anything the children can put in their mouths. Use extra precautions by washing everything they touch.

Thank you for considering us. Stay safe and stay healthy. Disinfection specialist for over 15 years.
